My Big Fat Greek Wedding

In 2002 the movie that started the "my big fat" era was created. This movie, in case you didn't get it, was My Big Fat Greek Wedding. This film caught me off guard. But I'm not opposed to surprises. I personally was not aware of the majority of the actors and actresses in this film. However it didn't take away from the movie its self.
This movie as about a Greek girl, who has a big fat Greek family. Compared to most of the Greek families I know, the family in the movie is portrayed accurately as a Greek family. The family in the film is close. Close as in everyone is in everyone’s business. Toula is 30 and single and not quite what is expected from her family, so of course they talk about her and try and fix her. What they are fixing is that she looks old and tired (according to her father) and is single and has no Greek husband babies. All of her cousins have married a nice Greek boy and made nice Greek babies. Ya know, because that is what is expected of Greek women. Work for the family business and marry a nice Greek boy and reproduce.
Toula is not like the typical Greek woman. She doesn’t want to be smothered by her family; she wants to do some thing with her life. She wants to find true love. As it would happen Toula is deathly shy. She sees a man who is her ideal guy (Ian) and says not one word. Eventually they cross paths again and they end up dating. However Toula has to keep it from her family because he is not Greek. Things become serious and Ian proposes to her. It finally comes to Ian meeting the family. The WHOLE family. The rest of the film is a slightly comical showing of how he interacts with Toula’s family and vise versa.
There are many things that I like about this movie. The main one would be the culture of the Greek family. I, personally, have always admired the Greek culture and this movie shows the modern family. I also like how the movie is not necessarily a comedy, but also a drama. It shows how life is full of irony. Another part of the movie that is my favorite is when Ian meets the whole family. One seen is when they discover he is a vegetarian, an aunt says “that’s ok, ill make lamb.” Man oh man that one seen just has me roll on the floor cracking up! One of the things that threw my off was the surprise guest appearance of former boy band member Joey Fatone. This movie is not one that is vibrant enough to stand way out in my mind when I think of great movie, but it is still a good movie in my eyes. It is kind of bland, but then again it was created to be. I would recommend this movie. It is full of little laughs and who doesn’t want to know what the Greek family life is like.
