Beer Fest Review

In 2001, a movie came out and swept up today’s, young Americans. This comedic movie was Super Troopers. The next movie from the same creators was Club Dread, which was not as big of a hit. However, their latest movie, Beer Fest is another hit. This movie appeals to a young, particularly collage aged, demographic.
In Beer Fest, two brothers who have a German background must take their grandfathers ashes to Munich to place them their family resting place. They go to Germany and it just so happens to be during October Fest. One drunken thing leads to another and they are lead to a under ground drinking competition. This competition is Beer Fest. Teams from all over the world come to compete in it. As it turned out, is also their family-resting place, and they have distant relatives who basically run and win Beer Fest. These relatives have a problem with the American brothers. Apparently their grandfather stole the recipe for the best beer in the world. The brothers are brutalized and embarrassed by their German counter parts and sent packing back to America.
The brothers decide to gather three friends to make up a team of 5 that could defeat the Germans at the next annual Beer Fest. It jumps from the Americans training to the Germans training. I won’t ruin the movie for you but it has a very dramatic ending, which is quite comitial.
Some things in the movie could have been done to make it visually more appealing. For instance, in the scenes where they are training, they jump from action to action. This could have been smoother to make it more understandable for the audience. However the good outweighed the bad. The humor of the movie was truly rated ‘R’. One of my favorite comedic crutches would have to be the German accents. It was constant throughout the movie and kept a grin on my face. There were a lot of little details that were added in that made it even better. For instance, one of the American teammates is Jewish, and has an array of fun Yamikas. This small detail could have been easily over looked but, like in Super Troopers, the more you watch it, the more you realize. Mainly, the humor of the movie is in the plot. It was a joy seeing how the guys from Broken Lizard pulled it off. If it were any other comedic team it wouldn’t have worked.
I enjoyed this movie, however, it in not for everyone. As I stated earlier, it is directed for a specific demographic. And even if you are part of this particular demographic it might not be for you. But if you are a Broken Lizard fan, can't get enough potty humor, and love silly plots, than I suggest you see Beer Fest. Also, if you are just curious about the movie, go see it and have a laugh or two.
